In Großbritannien existiert eine Bildungspflicht, aber keine Schulpflicht. Die Verantwortung, dass den Kindern eine Bildung zuteil wird, liegt bei den Eltern. Die Bildungpflicht kann durch den Schulbesuch erfüllt werden oder "auf andere Weise". Das Leben ohne Schule fällt in die Kategorie "auf andere Weise". Erreicht ein Kind das schulpflichtige Alter von 5 Jahren, soll aber nicht eingeschult werden, brauchen die Eltern niemanden über diese Entscheidung in Kenntnis zu setzen, nicht einmal die örtliche Schulbehörde (Local Education Authorities). Hat ein Kind bereits eine Schule besucht und möchte diese verlassen, um zu Hause zu lernen, muss die Schule lediglich schriftlich darüber informiert werden. Es ist keine Genehmigung notwendig. Unbeschulte Kinder brauchen nicht dem nationalen Lehrplan zu folgen und müssen nicht an den landesweiten Prüfungen teilnehmen.
